Lymphedema Treatment
After breast surgery and/or radiation therapy involving lymph nodes or vessels, the lymph system may be compromised, allowing lymph fluid to accumulate in the arm and hand or leg. This causes swelling that can often be painful and cause debilitating stiffness and loss of arm mobility. Many post-mastectomy patients may experience these symptoms, occurring anytime from within months from the surgery to years later. If left untreated the symptoms tend to worsen and cause risk for infection in that limb. Many studies show that lymphedema is best treated in its early stages. Physical therapy can help with the prevention and treatment of lymphedema through patient education, gentle massage techniques, and fitting for compression garments. Neeka Minor, PT is well trained in these techniques and will work closely with your physician to ensure a successful recovery. |
