Urinary Incontinence
Barb Allan, PT has had additional training in the area of Women's Health. According to a 2001 nationwide survey conducted by the National Association For Continence, 40% of women with urinary stress incontinence report their condition started before the age of 40. Just 5 years after a woman's first child birth, up to 30% are already experiencing the problem. Around 60% of incontinent women associate the onset of their condition with pregnancy, childbirth or the postpartum period. (NAFC newsletter, Vol 23, 2005). Urinary incontinence can be socially embarrassing. Some of the causes of urinary incontinence can be from muscular weakness in the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles or from pelvic misalignment. Physical therapy can help with manual techniques to the pelvis and instruction in proper strengthening exercises. Education in lifestyle modifications and behavioral changes can often help the symptoms. |
