So, Just what is a Family Physician? The American Academy of Family Physicians defines a Family Physician as a physician educated and trained in family practice, a broadly encompassing medical specialty. Family Practice is the medical specialty which provides continuing and comprehensive care for the individual and family. Family Physicians possess unique attitudes, skills and knowledge which qualify them to provide continuing and comprehensive medical care, health maintenance and preventive services to each member of the family regardless of sex, age or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral or social. These physicians serve as each patient`s advocate in all health related matters including the appropriate use of consultants, health services and community resources.
Family Physicians treat your whole health...and the whole person. Family Physicians train in all major medical areas including medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, sports medicine, preventive medicine, minor surgery, endoscopy and behavioral medicine. They diagnose and treat the full range of problems people bring to them. They know when to treat you and when to bring in another specialist you can trust. They know that you`re not just a collection of parts, symptoms or conditions. You`re a whole person...so they treat you like one.
Family Physicians practice today`s medicine. Family Physicians know the most up-to-date treatments and technologies. Family Physicians train for three years in real practice settings, treating patients in the office, the hospital and at home. And, in order to keep up with the rapidly-changing world of medicine, they recertify to keep their board certification every six years. In order to recertify in Family Practice they must take at least 50 hours of continuing medical education each year, have an in-office chart audit and pass a board certification test. Continuing medical education means that Family Physicians apply the latest medical breakthroughs to the everyday care of their patients.
And...they help you stay well. Family Physicians are trained in preventive medicine. They believe that preventing a health problem is better than having to overcome one. They help you make the right health choices to keep you and your family healthy.
