Steven Dubs, MD; Lesley Fraser, MD;
Joseph Livengood, MD; Michael Peetz, MD | What is General Surgery? General surgery is the treatment of injury, deformity, and disease using operative procedures. General surgery is frequently performed to alleviate suffering when a cure is unlikely through medication alone. It can be performed in the office as an out-patient service or in the hospital.
Areas Treated by General Surgery Include:
- Abdomen and its contents (gallbladder, appendix, colon, stomach, etc.)
- Breast, skin and soft tissue
- Head and neck, including tumors of the skin, salivary glands, thyroid, parathyroid, and the oral cavity
- Vascular system
- Surgical oncology, surgical therapy of the cancer patient
- Trauma, including musculoskeletal, hand and head injuries
- Robotic Surgery
- Endovascular Surgery
What is involved with a surgical examination? The surgeon reviews the patient`s health history with special attention to the current condition. The practice of ordering routine laboratory tests before admission for surgery is common. Many doctors believe that urinalysis, chest x-rays, or complete blood counts, for example, can identify potential problems that might complicate the surgery if not detected and treated early.
What kind of knowledge and training does a surgeon have? A surgeon manages a broad spectrum of surgical conditions affecting almost any area of the body. The surgeon establishes the diagnosis and provides the preoperative, operative, and postoperative care to surgical patients and is usually responsible for the comprehensive management of the trauma victim and critically ill patient.
After four years of medical school, a general surgeon usually train for an additional 5-7 years. During this, surgeons learn to use a variety of diagnostic techniques for visualizing internal structures and certain advanced techniques for treating surgical diseases.
"As surgeons we care for emergent and urgent conditions which can disrupt a planned schedule. We thank our patients and their families for their understanding when we are called away from the office or home to help other patients." Michael Peetz, MD
