Internal Medicine is a medical specialty concerned with the health of all adults. Physicians who specialize in this field, known as internists, are skilled in disease prevention and in managing complex disorders of the body.
General internists develop long-term relationships with patients as their primary/personal physician. Internists perform regular physical exams, offer preventative care, diagnose and treat most non-surgical illnesses, and refer serious or unusual cases to appropriate specialists, such as recommending a gastroenterologist (internist who specializes in disorders of the digestive system) for persistent stomach problems.
Who Should be Seen by an Internal Medicine Physician? Any person from age 16 and older.
What kind of knowledge and training does an Internist have? All physicians who specialize in Internal Medicine must obtain a medical degree and complete a three-year in-hospital internal medicine training program. Internists who chose to seek a subspecialty must spend one to three additional years studying to be certified in that discipline.
Internal Medicine Physicians help you stay well. Internists believe that preventing a health problem is better than having to overcome one. They help you make the right health choices to keep you healthy.
Most importantly, they listen. Physicians in Internal Medicine know that no one knows you like you. That`s why they take time to listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and respect your priorities. They know there is a lot of health and medical information out there, and they want to help you make the right choices for a healthier life.
